Magazine-worthy gf/bf moment:

Let me get one thing straight: I love Instagram. I am shamelessly and unapologetically addicted. Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night to pee only to find myself three hours later scrolling through my feed staring at people I never met taking overlit selfies in bars and insomniacs on a 2 am camera-roll marathon posting #throwbackthursday pics with over-sentimental captions. And I LOVE it.

And because this website is mainly about fashion, Instagram is everything in this cyber game de mode. Btw. are you following us on IG? #ShamelessSelfPromo
Thanks to Instagram you can watch catwalk shows in real time (hello there Burberry), drool over street style from all over the world, plus you get to find out about fast fashion sales every time one of your friends brags about scoring a new coat for half the price (damn you Ying Li). What more could I possibly want?

Instagram is #goals for almost anything, but what Instagram isn’t any more is hip. Instead it is a world of materialistic hipsterdom and we see the same visual cliches each time we open our account. All high heels/loafers/boots on pretty tiled floorssunglasses held against kitch sunsets or pretty much anything else, nail art next to donutsbagelsburgerssandwichessaladsice creamcoffeefancy drinks.

Fashion has embraced Instagram like no other industry. But in order to be most instagrammable, every IG fashionista/fashionisto is anxious to look exactly like every other IG fashionista/fashionisto out there – because however ironic your captions and however iconic your selfies, social media is in a nutshell just a popularity contest where numbers come first and everything else is second.

One Instagram account did an A+ job parodying the impossibly perfect lifestyle of all those #livingauthentic that take the same pictures in the same places using the same captions. The creator of Socality Barbie, Oregon-based photographer Darby Cisneros told Wired “I couldn’t tell any of their pictures apart so I thought, ‘What better way to make my point than with a mass-produced doll?’” Socality Barbie got so popular she amassed 1.1 million followers. We all know what’s her secret to success- either you are Socality Barbie yourself or you know at least one person whose Instagram looks just like hers.

And now 136 selfies later, she disappeared at just 22. Twenty-two weeks to be exact. Darby explains:

I started SB as a way to poke fun at all the Instagram trends that I thought were ridiculous. Never in 1 million years did I think it would receive the amount of attention that it did but because of that it has open the door to a lot of great discussions like: how we choose to present ourselves online, the insane lengths many of us go to to create the perfect Instagram life, and calling into question our authenticity and motives. It’s been a blast running this account but I believe SB’s work here is done.

Sofía is a rara avis in today’s plastic world that puts Kardashians on pedestal and the cover of every fashion magazine (I’m looking at you September issue of Vogue & Harper’s Bazaar). No make up, unique thrift store pieces and yet she still manages to turn heads. As Coco Chanel once famously said: “Simplicity is the keynote of all true elegance.” Sofía is all that and more: simple, elegant, naturally beautiful, interesting & smart. The proof of that lies below.

-Well, I was raised in Monterrey, a city in the northeast of Mexico. I’m studying psychology at Langara right now. I love reading, eating, exercising and being with friends.

-To be honest I’m still not certain that it is my thing. I’m not 100% confident, but it is definitely something that I really like. I just find satisfaction in seeing how meticulously planned are scientific studies in general, and I like that they are focused on human behaviour because it is something that I can relate to.

-I don’t have one favourite place, but I like places in which there are a lot of trees (and preferably water) and you rarely hear people. So pretty much any forest.

-Stretch and roll a little bit.

-In my mood. If I feel like wearing girly clothes and doing my make-up nicely, I will. If I feel like wearing sweatpants and sneakers, I will as well.

-I’m wearing a Calvin Klein denim jacket that my aunt used to wear when she was my age, a white top from Runaway, an American Eagle skirt and some sandals that I found in a thrift store.

-Oh God, I love thrift shopping. One of my favourite thrift stores is the on on E 12th avenue, near Main street. That’s where I found the sandals I’m wearing and many garments that I love.

-No, I believe in people wearing anything they like regardless of if it is fashionable or not.

-El Patron on Robson has some really good food. Best Mexican I’ve had so far in this city.

-I sometimes post things on my Instagram which is @sofiaregalado, but don’t expect too much because I’m not too good at it.

Note: I beg to differ! Sofia’s IG is amazing and you should follow her.

All that glitters may not be gold for some but sparkles are actually worth more than 24 karats gold in my world. I’m not ashamed to admit that I’m drawn to shiny stuff and I bet there are plenty of other women/men out there who would cover their bodies in glitter daily if they could (for now ladies cover your hair roots and armpits while men can add extra bling to their beards).

The only reason I slaved away at two jobs while juggling full time college was so I could afford to buy Miu Miu shoes … wait for it … wait for it … wait for it … Miu Miu shoes covered in glitter. You can call it #glittercommitment, #glitterobsession, #overthetopglitterstupidity but I bet every single person on this planet was born with at least a little bit of glitter in their veins. Don’t believe me?

Read through this quick glitter quiz below:

  • Glitter Glue is one of the best inventions ever
  • When shopping, you often to think “This would look a lot better if it was covered in glitter!”
  • You love glitter, but rhinestones and sequins are still pretty cool
  • There is no such thing as too much glitter
  • You own a pair of shoes that have glitter on them
  • You’ve always wanted to throw glitter in the air and take a magical photo of it
  • You covered a wine bottle with glitter because you saw it on Pinterest
  • Cupcakes with glitter frosting are the best (edible glitter sprinkles, of course)
  • You’ve had a dream that involved glitter

Done? If at least two of these statements rang true for you, then welcome to our glitter family. You’ll love what’s coming next.

NYFW backstage magician Pat McGrath decided to apply lots of glitterry bliss where no one else usually puts it. Pat gave models a shimmering crimson red lip for the Atelier Versace runway and set off full-blown sparkle mania. She then went and launched a limited quantity of her Pat McGrath Labs makeup kits to re-create the look which sold out in minutes.

Lucky for you and me, Sephora took notice and stocked up on that glitter glory. You can get it in three different shades or if you want to kiss your pay check goodbye and live off instant ramen for weeks just like I plan to do, you can buy all shades together in one pink sequined package. Let’s not forget –  Vancouver Fashion Week is around the corner and everyone wants to look their best. Whether you opt to go for more natural jeweled line across Lily Aldridge’s cupid’s bow, or full on crimson velvet on Slick Woods’s mouth, you surely will be turning heads. And if there’s something you need to take from this blog post it’s when in doubt, just add glitter (preferably lots of it and to the places where no one expects it for the extra shock value). PAOLO SANTOS GETS IT! Popular Langara beau who never disappoints to put a smile on our face (and yours too if you know him) seems to have it all – he can dress, he can party & he can dribble! With his love for casual style & beanies (LOTS of them), bubbly personality and fist pumps & hugs coming from each corner, it’s impossible to miss him. I caught up with Paolo one chilly evening and talked about him & his brand WSDM that believes you are who you surround yourself with.

Tell us a little about yourself.

– My name is Paolo Santos. I’m 23 years old. I work at Glowbal Restaurant and Global RESP Corporation (coincidence?) I’m in my last year of the Marketing program at Langara College. When I’m not busy with work or school, I like to be around my friends and family. I also play in a few basketball leagues every year.

What do you think about Vancouver fashion in general? Do you think people here are interested in fashion?

– When I hear Vancouver fashion, the article about us being voted one of the worst dressed cities comes into mind. Haha yoga pants.. I’m into it. But in my opinion, I think Vancouver fashion is growing. People are becoming more fashion conscious catching on to particular trends or sometimes just wearing whatever the f*** they want, which is admirable for sure (at least the people I know). Overall, I think we’re not that bad.

What are you wearing?

– I’m wearing sk8 hi’s by VANS, jeans from UNIQLO, scoop long tee from KNYEW, and the hoodie is from STUSSY.

Can you tell us little bit about the WSDM brand and concept? Where can we get it?

– Yea, WSDM originated from W.Is.D.O.M, which stood for What Is Done Open Minded. For me WSDM CLUB is more of a movement/lifestyle than just a brand from how I perceive it. For me it’s about finding who you truly are and recognizing the trials and tribulations you go through in life is a blessing and the core foundation of your success in the future. But that’s the beauty of WSDM CLUB, it can be what you want it to be you just have to decide. On some of our tee’s you’ll notice it says, “Knowledge + Experience” with a triangle logo, which encompasses some of the things I said before plus some more and the ’92 is the year we were born (you feel me?). So we put all that on a shirt for people who understand the concept to wear and relate to us as well as each other.

WSDM CLUB is an ongoing process as we’re still trying to create an online store for you guys but if you want to purchase any of our items now, you can start by following WSDM CLUB on Instagram or direct messaging me @paoloalexanderking for further information on pricing and how to get it.

What influenced your taste for fashion?

– My first real job in high school was working as a sales associate/stylist at Club Monaco. I think that’s when it all started. I got a little taste of how decent I can actually look in good quality tapered clothes. I was also into men’s fashion blogs, thestyleblogger or TSBmen in particular (I’m not sure if that’s what they’re called now they changed their name a couple times) so that was a large influence on my fashion at one point. Now people tell me I dress like a hipster or a thug, or some other s*** haha but I think it’s cool. I feel like I don’t follow anyone or any style in particular but I’ll throw on anything that’s comfortable. Sounds cliche but I’m either in Nike sweats around the house or in a good pair of jeans with a large white tee and a flannel #cozyboyz. I think I’m in the middle of hip and hood? Haha, oh I also like how Chris Brown dresses.

What’s one fashion item you cannot imagine your life without?

– I can’t imagine my life without my beanies or hats. If anyone knows me, they know I f*** with hats. Definitely hats.

What are your plans once you graduate Langara?

– Once I graduate I’ll to continue work at both my jobs to save enough money to travel. Once I have enough money saved, I plan to spend it all on partying at clubs I’ve never been to and just enjoy my life. Its taken me over 4 years to be almost done with school and I think I deserve to kick back a little bit after . Also, looking forward to doing big things with the brand as well. Hope you guys can all check us out and follow us on our journey!
